The year 2004 was not a spectacular one for the DIY store operators in Turkey. The total number of stores increased by very little. The foreign firms remained completely on the sidelines when it came to new openings, and the local company Tekzen was the only operator to enlarge its network of branches. The group inaugurated two stores last year, so that it numbered 15 outlets with a combined retail area of 58 000 m² by the end of the year. This means that the Turkish DIY retailer’s increase in floorspace amounts to around 15 per cent. The four DIY retailers taken into consideration here had an overall total of 31 outlets with a combined retail area of 173 000 m² at the end of 2004. Altogether the retail area increased by 5.5 per cent last year over 2003.
